90. Attr: Washington Allston (American, 1779-1843)

Portrait of a handsome young man, circa 1820-30. Oil on canvas, in an original period oak frame with black polychrome. Sitter unknown, most probably American. Canvas size is approx. 30"T x 25"W. Overall on frame approx. 36"T x 30-1/2"W. *Pittsburgh Gallery

Allston was born in Georgetown, South Carolina, and graduated from Harvard College in Boston in 1800. His style varied from classicism to romanticism and was known in Europe in the early part of his career for his historical paintings. Upon returning to the United States and settling in Boston in 1818, he was known for his figural and landscape paintings, many of them romanticized, pastoral figures in landscapes, as the desire for large historical paintings was out of vogue.
