A Group of Four Maps:

1067. A Group of Four Maps: "Civitas Exoniae (vulgo Excester) urbs primaria in comitatu Devoniae", "South Wales" by Robert Morden, "Erdfurt die Haupstatt in Thuringen nach ausserlichem ansehen...", "Castellum Versaliense: Vue d'Optique Representant..." by Daumont

1) Exeter. Published by Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, ca. 1563. "Civitas Exoniae (vulgo Excester) urbs primaria in comitatu Devoniae" from "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", Cologne. Hand-colored engraving on laid paper. Measures approx. 13-3/4" x 16-1/2"; not framed. 2) "South Wales," by Robert Morden, uncolored, thin laid paper. Measures approx. 15-1/4" x 16-1/2"; not framed. This particular map is interesting because it is one of the first ones to show longitudes measured from the meridian of St. Paul's Cathedral given in the form of time in minutes at the top of the map in Roman numerals and at the bottom in degrees. This was done to clarify local times that were taken from the sun as there was no national standard time. These maps were the first to show the roads based on Ogilby's earlier work of 1675, and included 3 scales to cover the various scales used in different parts of the country. 3) "Erdfurt die Haupstatt in Thuringen nach ausserlichem ansehen...aber nit in grund gelegt..." From an edition of Sebastian Munster's "Cosmographia", Basle: Henricpetri, 1628. Hand-colored woodcut on double-page sheet showing an "optical" view of Erfurt, German text on verso. Shows the capital of Thuringia, Germany with its cathedral hill topped by the Cathedral of St. Mary Domberg (where Martin Luther was ordained a Catholic priest in 1507) and the Church of St. Severus. This is a fragment of the page, which also showed a view of Fluda; in a contemporary wood frame, under glass; image image measures approx. 3-1/2" x 14-1/2", framed overall approx. 10" x 20-5/8". 4) "Castellum Versaliense: Vue d'Optique Representant Le Chateau Royal de Versailles de cote de la Grande Avenue de Paris (#58)." The projection view shows Versailles in the 18th century with coaches, military figures, civilians. It was part of a series of views by Daumont of Versailles that includes of gardens, etc. Framed under glass, image measures approx. 10-3/4" x 15-1/2".
