"Liebesgarten" (Dear Garden). Oil on canvas, not signed, canvas size 10" x 8-1/2", with gilt frame and liner 17-3/4" x 16-1/4". A charming scene in which a monk regards a full market basket with other food stuffs and game spread about a work table. The title appears to be a reference to his happy expression beholding an abundance of food.

74. Alex Kortner (American, 20th Century)
A recumbent nude. Oil on canvas, circa 1969, signed in the lower right, framed, canvas size 8" x 10", with framing overall 15" x 17". An undated photocopy of a newspaper article about the artist is taped to the back of the frame. Kortner was originally from the Pittsburgh area and studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute. He studied art also at the Chicago Art Institute, and developed a career in advertising art in New York city. The advertising work afforded him the opportunity to travel extensively and paint scenes from his travels. He preferred to paint his fine art works to the restrictions of commissioned advertising work, though his illustrations appeared in many national magazines such as Colliers and Popular Mechanics. In 1964 he opened the Delray Art Center in Delray Beach, Florida, and taught and worked there until his retirement.

A softly painted summer scene with a mother and a child walking by a riverbank. A boat is seen tied on shore and there is an indication of sailing activity on the far shore and a hill in the distance. The bright and fresh sunlight is the signature composition for Gisson's work. "Reproduction Rights Reserved by the Artist" is stamped on the back of the canvas. A typed descriptive piece about the artist is also affixed to the back of the frame.
