871. An Antique Papier Mache Ladies' Compendium Box
An unusual antique papier mache ladies' compendium box, meant for jewelry storage and other personal objects. The box is in the shape of a miniature armoire, decorated outside with mother-of-pearl chip inlay surrounded by gilt painted scrolls and dots. The top of the box has a scrolling shape and a raised element on top, faux painted to look like green malachite and with applied decorative brass shapes. The front doors also have raised faux malachite shapes and matching applied brasses. The two sides also have brasses applied atop flat faux malachite painting. The base is scalloped with plinth feet at the corners, also with mother-of-pearl inlay and scrolling gilt paint. One door has a lock with the key. The interior of the box features four small drawers which are embellished with winding gilt painted borders. The overall measurement is approx. 10-1/2"W x 8"D x 11"H.

An elaborate 19th Century papier mache mother-of-pearl inlaid and gilt painted work box, approx. 11"W x 8-1/4"D x 5-3/4"H, locking (lacking the key) hinged shaped lid, plain interior with crazed black lacquer finish and scrolling gilt painted trim at the lip. The lid is decorated with a central painted and inlaid floral motif, surrounded by a grapevine border, also inlaid mother-of-pearl and gilt painted, outside is a greek key design on the irregular edge. Three of the sides also have mother-of-pearl inlaid and gilt painted floral sprays and other scrolling vine and flower embellishments. A pretty and lacy-looking decorative box.

873. A Victorian Papier Mache Stationary Box
A Victorian Papier Mache stationary box, rectangular in shape on plinth footed base, approx. 8"W x 5"D x 6"H. The exterior of the box is elaborately decorated with mother of pearl, scrolling gilt ornamentation and minutely painted designs. There is a mound shaped rectangle on the lid with the image of a church inlaid in mother of pearl, and an image on the front face of a baby Bacchus holding grapes (mostly worn of detail) on mother-of-pearl inlay. The interior of the box is fitted with silver foil-clad sections for paper and envelope storage. The locking front panel of the box opens down and folds out again to reveal a red velvet clad flat surface surrounded by a red and gilt tooled leather border. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.

These slender urns feature a design of tree branches and butterflies. Mounted on green composite bases. Each is stamped "T. Hingre" on the sides. Hingre, a sculptor specializing in metalwork was an animal sculptor of small mice, chickens and birds along with the occassional bull. Each urn with bases measures approx. 9"T.
