11. Unknown Artist (American School, 18th Century)
Portrait of Two Children. Oil on canvas, no signature found, canvas size 40" x 31-1/2", with 4-1/2" wide gold leafed frame overall 49" x 40-1/2". This is a wonderfully charming portrait of two small children, possibly a girl and a boy, both clad in pretty gauzy dresses as was the custom for both genders. The smiling pair are seated in the center and gaze directly to the viewer. The child that is probably a girl has her arm around the other. The child to the right holds an orange and also a large pink hat. There is an indication of a drapery in the background over a landscape, and part of a parasol at their feet. In portraits of this type, it is considered most desirable to have the entire figure portrayed. It is also of note that the quality of the painting in the faces is slightly better than the rest of the composition. Either the faces were painted by a more classically schooled artist, or were painted with more concentrated care.

Portrait of a young man with an instrument. Oil on canvas, no signature found, canvas size 28" x 23", with simple beaded 3-1/2" wide frame overall 35" x 30". This somewhat naive style portrait depicts a serious young man in a black coat and tie with a white turned down collared shirt, before a column and some flowing curtains.
