835. A Regency Period Tea Caddy Clad in Tortoise Shell


Pretty tea caddy, ca. 1830-40, of light colored tortoise shell sits on four bun feet. Small brass insert with letter "W" on top; escutcheon is also brass. Interior features two compartments one for green tea, one for black. The interior has remnants of foiling lining. Underside of hinged lid is covered in taupe color velvet. Measures approx. 6"H x 7-1/4"W. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.

A beautiful miniature chest of two drawers, the bottom one with lock mechanism, with inlaid wood details on the top and on the drawer fronts, with ornate applied metal details on each side of the front and matching metal escutcheons, with two turned wood knobs on each drawer that have a worn gilt finish. The chest stands on squared wooden legs, with the front legs having a plinth at the bottom with worn gilt paint. The principal wood appears to be walnut which has been finished with a satiny gloss. The secondary woods are pine and oak. The chest measures 10-3/4"H x 16"W x 7"D. The initials "K P" drilled in tiny holes in the back panel.

An antique miniature Pannetiere, with carved and stamped decorations, in a rich dark pine wood finish, 16-1/2"W x 17-3/4"H x 6-1/2"D. The cabinet has a spindled and carved openwork at the top, two hinged doors and two sliding doors at the front with openwork, spindles and carving, and the top and sides are decorated with stamped stylized flower and circle images, with swags. The back is plain with a pretty patterning of the natural wood. It has a carved apron and stands up on 2-1/2"H legs.

A pair of Indian miniature paintings on abalone shells. The first depicting a finely detailed courtly scene with a royal couple seated in a gazebo receiving visitors while clusters of fantastical animals and birds surround them. The second is a scene of a group of dancers and musicians celebrating in a tented encampment while a donkey and a camel rest in the foreground. Each shell is approx. 6-1/4"H x 6-1/4"W, of naturally irregular shell shape, approx. 1-1/2"D. Not signed.

A delicate miniature Vienna enamel ewer with a matching plate. The piece is enameled in white with a pale blue interior and a pale blue vermicelli decoration on the bottom of the plate. Both pieces are accented with exposed gold washed silver, some of which are minutely beaded or roped. The handle is an applied metal curvilinear form. The surfaces are embellished with tiny paintings depicting idyllic scenes with ladies and gentlemen in various activities including courting, playing instruments, reading and playing with a lamb. The shoulder of the ewer depicts putti in the clouds. The colors are rose, light blue, yellow and teal. The ewer measures 4-3/4"H to the top of the handle and the tiny plate measures 2-3/4" in diameter. Both pieces have maker's hallmarks. The ewer fits nicely into the interior rim of the plate.

A glazed ceramic pictorial tavern scene in relief, approx. 10" x 14-1/2". The eyes of the people appear to be glass. The jovial scene, reminiscent of Hogarth's "Rake's Progress" depicts the tavern mistress in the center seated at a full table. On either side are men enjoying their leisure, dressed in 18th Century garb, and a masked Pierot seated atop a barrel of brew at the left.

A delicately enameled bell push with a clock inset in the center, mounted onto a small white marble ring, bezeled with gold washed silver fittings marked 925 and hallmarked, with pink rosebuds and blue forget-me-nots strewn about the guilloche enamel in powder blue. Inside the back of the metal case is a small circular door containing the winding key, stamped with maker's hallmarks. Overall the piece measures 3-1/2" in diameter x 1-3/8"H.

A Russian cloisonne cream pitcher made by Gustav Klingert, with exposed silver interior, bottom and underside of the handle, enameled in various shades of blue, clear red and cream, with gold wash, hallmarked on the bottom as well as on the handle. Cyrillic letters of GK in a square cartouche (Postnikova-Loseva #3905). The pitch measures 3-1/4"H at the top of the handle and the body measures approx. 2-3/4"W at the widest point.

Two Russian Cloisonee saucers, ca. 19th Century, one is 6" diameter, the other 6-1/8" diameter, enameled in blues, reds, ivory and green. Bottom of each saucer is marked with a Russian 84 zolotniks mark and another unidentified mark. The smaller of the two also has an incised "KF 84" mark in Cyrillic.

A decorative French spoon in plique-à-jour enameling technique. The results of this technique are similar to stained glass. The bowl of the spoon and the tip of the handle feature lion decorations within transparent blue, red, green and violet enamels. Twisted handle decorated with blue enamel. Hallmarked on the handle with initials "G. A. S." and animal hallmark. The spoon measures approx. 4-3/4"L.
