943. A Japanese Satsuma Censor With Lid, Circa 19th Century


An antique Japanese Satsuma censor with lid, in highly hand embellished glazed porcelain, with two handles and a scalloped base, with a Foo dog surmounting the lid, pierced with a hole underneath the Foo dog for smoke, the sides depicting scenes of poets and scholars seated in a garden, surrounded overall with polychrome geometric patterns. Overall the censor measures 7-1/4"H x 4" in diameter at the widest point. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.

A pair of Japanese Satsuma vases, each approx. 4-3/4"H x 4-1/2" in diameter at the widest, in a bulbous shape with a small foot, each surface entirely embellished with figures and designs in polychrome and gilding, with depictions of people, demons, and dragons, with raised enameled accents. The lip of each is simple gilding and the interior a plain rosy ivory glaze. Each has a black and gilt mark on the bottom indicating Royal Satsuma.

A pair of antique Japanese Satsuma vases, with circular lip and base, the body in a squared shape with rounded edges, approx. 6-1/4"H x 2-1/4" square, the body of each vase entirely embellished on the outside with hand painted figures and geometric designs, with enameled accents and gilding, the interior a simple clear glaze, each marked on the bottom with the black and gilt mark.

A lot of Japanese Satsuma items, consisting of a 6-1/4" diameter plate with a foot, with ladies and a child in a landscape hand painted and enameled, with the red Satsuma mark on the bottom; a small bowl with a foot, 2-1/2" in diameter x 1"H, with a scene with figures and pagodas hand painted and enameled on the interior and other scenes with figures and carp on the outside, unmarked; a small round jar with lid, 2-3/4" in diameter x 1-1/2"H, with a scene with ladies on the lid, leaves on the outside, and floral sprays on the inside and the underside of the lid, the lid with a small button gilded knob, not marked; and a small covered jar, 3" in diameter x 1-1/4"H, with a scene with figures hand painted on the lid and a warrior painted on the underside of the lid and on the bottom of the interior, with the red and gilt mark on the bottom.

A pair of delicately flaring bowls, each with a small foot, with the interiors depicting scenes with figures in landscapes surrounded by the cobalt blue glaze on the inner rim and the outside, embellished with gilt designs, marked on the bottom with a gilt mark over red, each 4-3/4" in diameter at the lip x 1-3/4"H. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.

A small Kinkozan Satsuma vase, the shape flaring upward from a 2-1/8" diameter circular base widening to 2-3/4" at the shoulder and then narrowing to 1" at the flaring lip. The sides are hand decorated with figures in landscapes surrounded by a raised gilt line in an irregular shape. The cobalt blue glazes are all embellished with gilt geometric designs. The vase measures 5"H and has the Royal Satsuma marks on the bottom. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.

950. A Large Kinkozan Satsuma Censor With Lid


A large Kinkozan Satsuma censor with a pierced lid, with a squat round shape on a 1/4" H foot, with shapes like lion's heads protruding from the sides, and the lid surmounted by a flowing abstract shape for the knob. The sides are decorated with sprays of flowers and butterflies, with a landscape with figures on the opposing side. The bottom is marked in black with Japanese calligraphy and the Royal Satsuma mark. The jar measures 6"H x 5-1/4" in diameter at the widest point.

A Kinkozan Satsuma miniature lidded jar, approx. 2-1/2" in diameter x 1-1/2"H, with cast shapes like ringed handles on either side, decorated on the top with a group of women and children surrounded by the cobalt blue glaze with gilt embellishments, marked on the bottom with the red Royal Satsuma mark.

952. A Carved Hornbill Ivory Snuff Bottle, ca. 1850's


Square shaped bottle with rounded shoulder, carved of Hornbill ivory, with stopper. Sides have the reddish color sought after in Hornbill. Front of bottle depicts two figures in front of a doorway with balcony in background; verso has a chrysanthemum with two small birds. Small footed base with vignette border. Apprx 2-1/4"T x 1-1/2"W. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery. Hornbill ivory is very rare and was extremley popular in China and the East Indies. The ivory, also known as Ho-ting, is a hard substance which is contained above the beak of the helmeted Hornbill. Gradually as the bird grows older it develops a helmet on the top of the skull. The ivory is covered with a gleaming red coating. Hornbill ivory first appeared in Chinese records during the Ming Dynasty.
