1016. "Bleak House" by Charles Dickens, Original Parts 1852-53


Published: Bradbury & Evans. 1852-1853, London, 1853. Blue illustrated paper covers. Volumes I-XX (20 parts in 19 editions), 8 vol, offered in a blue folio and hard case in dark blue. Bleak House advertisers listed in front portion, illustrations throughout by Hablot K. Browne with tissue guards. Many volumes with published notices bound in the middle, advertising up-coming works and sales. Losses to tail and head of paper covers, lightly discolored covers and edges. Interiors very clean and bright, minor foxing at edges of some plates, otherwise a very nice set.

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1853. First edition. Thick 8vo. Many 'humorously etched' illustrations by H.K. Browne. Full polished red morocco, with gilt tooling outlines. Spine with 6 raised bands, decorated with gilt tooling, gilt title and vignettes in five compartments. Marbled end-leafs and paper edges.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. First edition with 43 humorously etched illustrations by Seymour and Phiz, thick 8 vo, newly and most handsomely bound in 3/4 levant morocco super extra, full gilt back, gold lines on sides, gilt edges. Frontispiece with tissue guard, titled page laid on backing paper, some restorations to paper throughout, very little foxing-clean and bright. "Discovery of Jingle in the Heat" illustration has restored lower corner.

Full green leather binding, embossed with a medallion depicting Dickens, and characters from the stories (from the original illustrations by Browne). Gilt lettering on spine. Gilt top edges. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1857, First edition, volume one of two, 8 vol, illustrated by Phiz (Hablot K. Browne). 3/4 leather with marbled boards. Tipped in signed letter dated "Thursday third March 1864", recipient unknown; letter states " Many thanks for your call (?) yesterday. I decided to let Edward go, and as (?) not doubtful he will be the better for it.". Handwritten in blue inl on grey stationary of "Gad's Hill Place, Higham by Rochester Kent". Spine with many losses, interior clean and bright.

Spine with five raised bands and gilt-tooled accents, embossed lattice design within compartments; gilt letter title on red compartment insert. Newer end-papers, by W. Gould, Bookseller, Swaffham. This is one of the greatest unfinished mystery books ever written.

Published by The Bowen-Merrill Company, Indianapolis and Kansas City, 1898. In two volumes, 8 vo., illustrated with portraits, pictures of homes, etc. A story of the evolution of the status of women. Including public addresses, her own letters and many from her contemporaries during fifty years. 3/4 brown leather with gilt tooling with brown marbled boards, like marbled end papers. Front covers loose/detatched with spine cover falling away. Please read the hand written list photographed which lists include signed letters from suffragists, abolitionists and women's activists. 33 auto-letters signed, 2 letters signed and 3 signatures including Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Beecher Stowe.
