388. An American Silver Tankard by Liberty Browne (1776-1831), Philadelphia, Circa 1812-1815
An important heavy silver lidded tankard, made by Liberty Browne of Philadelphia (1776-1831), with a stepped lobed cover, scrolled handle and shield-shaped terminal, the plain baluster shaped body atop a stepped base. The front face of the tankard is beautifully inscribed with initials surrounded by a foliate wreath and a ribbon and bow at the top and tied wheat below. The tankard weighs 51.7 troy oz. and measures 10"H. It is marked on the bottom "L. Browne" four times. No other marks found.
Browne was a partner from 1801 to 1809 with John Houlton in Baltimore MD as BROWNE & HOULTON, a partner from 1810 to 1811 with William Seal in Philadelphia PA as BROWNE & SEAL and worked from 1812 to 1815 as a silversmith in Philadelphia PA. Browne was the President of the Select Council and appointed in many civic positions including Philadelphia county treasuer. He was an active member of many councils of defense during the War of 1812 and was held in high regard among his peers. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.

389. A London Sterling Silver Lidded Pot by Richard Hennel, English, ca. 1865
A lovely sterling silver waste pot with lid and double handles, 9" wide at the handles, the body approx. 6" in diameter. The melon form body is decorated in very detailed relief with flowers and foliage. One side has a relief of a running stag. The legs are very dimensional applied forms of oak leaves and acorns. The lid is surmounted by a blossom and leaf finial cast separately and bolted to the top, and its interior is washed in gold. The interior lip of the body is also washed in gold. The underside of the lid as well as the body is hallmarked "RH" (Richard Hennell). Also marked with the Leopard's Head, date letter F, the Lion Passant and the Queens Head markings. This finely worked piece would have been part of an elaborate Victorian table service. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.

390. A Beautiful Antique German Silver Basket
A beautiful and rare hand wrought antique Dutch sterling silver basket, marked 800 on the inside bottom, of ovoid shape with scalloped edges outlined with roses in relief, with intricate piercework on the sides with swags of flowers and baskets tied with bows, with scrolling foliate forms below and another rose motif with piercework below that. The bottom is a relief picture of putti with a bird in a basket and a birdcage, one feeding a small bird, with cupid holding his bow standing in the center of the group. This pretty lacy basket measures 8-3/8"W x 6-1/2" x 1-1/2"D, and weighs 5.8 troy oz.

This handsome pair of weighted Sheffield plate candlesticks, ca. 1870, is ornamented with floral swags, urns and ram heads and other Neo-classical motifs. Marked "Goldsmith's & Silversmiths Company, 112 Regent St." on each base. Green felt is glued on the bottom. Both measure approx. 12" tall.

A pretty silver repousse presentation bowl, possibly coin silver or plate as no marks found, with a graceful neck and foot, 9" diameter at the lip x 6" tall, with a foliate design in relief, and inscribed with a dedication at the lip. The inscription reads: "26 Januar 1918 Dem Fusilierrigiment Furst Karl Anton von Hohenzollern (hohenzollernsches) No. 40 das Feldartillerieregiment Grossherzog (1 Lad) No. 14 in truer Waffenbruderschaft". 397. English Sterling Silver Box, London ca. 1899-1900
Impressive sterling silver casket with a hinged lid and a button latch. The lid is designed with high relief decorations of flowers, foliage and Rococo-style C-scrolls. Sides of the box feature a chased design with C-scrolls and stylized foliage. The hallmarks on this piece date it to ca. 1899-1900 and depict a Leopard's head, date letter D, and a lion passant. Also marked with a monogram "LR" of an unidentified maker. Overall this piece measures approx. 3½"T x 8¼"L x 6"W. Weighs approx. 24 troy oz.

401. A Pair of Weighted Sterling Silver Candlesticks
A pair of heavily weighted silver candlesticks, approx. 11-5/8"H, with square platforms on which the rounded candlestick is set. The rounded base is decorated with a band of acanthus leaves in relief, above which is a gadrooned skirt, then a flaring stem with a band of flowers in relief at the widest topped by another gadrooned skirt, above which is a leafy flair and the candle cup; the bobeches at the top have a ribbed outer edge. The marks on the sides of the base are very worn, one appearing to be an "O", then "LF", and finally a circular mark too worn to determine.

The set includes a teapot, creamer and sugar bowl, which are not original to the set. Total weight approx. 24.6 troy oz. Teapot has hinged lid, a decorative ribbed band around the body, a squared black wood handle and a wood finial; bottom marked with "925", a lion passant, and an unidentified mark, as well as "sterling" and "extra weighted"; measures approx. 6"T x 11-5/8"L x 4-1/2"W. Both creamer and sugar are decorated with beaded rims and the handles display acanthus leaf accents; measure approx. 2-3/4"T x 3-3/4"L x 2-5/8"W and 2-5/8"T x 5"L (with handles) x 3-3/4"W. All three pieces are monogrammed with a fancy letter "G".
