582. An Antique Bennington Coffee Pot With Lid

An antique Bennington coffee pot with lid, glazed in brown and with cream underneath, with a graceful handle and curvilinear spout. Marked on the bottom, Lyman, Fenton & Co. Bennington, Vt. 1849.

This is a nice example of the common utility ware made by everyone from the 1840's to 1900, a yellowware dappled or streaked with lustrous manganese brown glaze. Its quality ranged from coarse splatterred yellow to a rich brown tortoise shell, and this ware was used for every sort of article, doorknobs or pudding pans, hound-handled jugs or lamp bases, cuspidors or picture frames. As an improvement on quiet brown Rockingham, a brilliant glaze flecked and streaked with colours was patented by Lyman, Fenton & Co. in November 1849. This colour-flecked glaze was not new; Fenton's patent referred only to a way of producing it with powdered colours.
