389. A London Sterling Silver Lidded Pot by Richard Hennel, English, ca. 1865

A lovely sterling silver waste pot with lid and double handles, 9" wide at the handles, the body approx. 6" in diameter. The melon form body is decorated in very detailed relief with flowers and foliage. One side has a relief of a running stag. The legs are very dimensional applied forms of oak leaves and acorns. The lid is surmounted by a blossom and leaf finial cast separately and bolted to the top, and its interior is washed in gold. The interior lip of the body is also washed in gold. The underside of the lid as well as the body is hallmarked "RH" (Richard Hennell). Also marked with the Leopard's Head, date letter F, the Lion Passant and the Queens Head markings. This finely worked piece would have been part of an elaborate Victorian table service. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.
