548. A Meissen Hand Painted Plaque

An ovoid porcelain plaque, painted with the "Penitent Magdalene" after Correggio, draped in blue velvet, lying in a woodland grotto reading a book, inscribed mark on verso "H 147" marked in glaze with the crossed swords mark, hand written "Circa 1770-1810 Meissen" (this recently written), framed in a gilt oval frame with a burgundy velvet liner and a braided fillet. Plaque measures approx. 4-1/2" x 5-1/2", overall with frame 8-1/2" x 10-1/4".

A German porcelain manufactory was established in 1710 in the fortress of Albrechtsburg at Meissen, where it remained until 1865. Meissen has remained one of the leading porcelain manufacturers and is widely considered one of the most collectable.
