| 392. A Pair of Regency Style Candlesticks by the Goldsmith's and Silversmith's Co.
This handsome pair of weighted Sheffield plate candlesticks, ca. 1870, is ornamented with floral swags, urns and ram heads and other Neo-classical motifs. Marked "Goldsmith's & Silversmiths Company, 112 Regent St." on each base. Green felt is glued on the bottom. Both measure approx. 12" tall. "This style had been prevalent in the late 18th Century and enjoyed a revival in the second half of the 19th Century. Sheffield plate is made by rolling sheet silver on to a copper base and in some instances you can see what is known as "bleeding", where the plate has worn away to reveal the copper base." "A Collectors Guide to Antiques" by Rebo International, illustrated on p. 238. 400/800 Sold $529.00 back to catalog |
