| 579. A Johann Maresch Factory Porcelain by August Otto
A polychrome glazed bisque figural made by Johann Maresch factory, by August Ottyo, ca. late 19th Century. The large figural piece which was at one time illuminated by an electric light is in the shape of a corner of a country shed. Inside the shed are a shepherdess and three sheep, beyond which are seen an country landscape. There are holes in the flat back through which a light was inserted so the glow came from under the roof. The piece measures approx. 27"H x 14"W x 8-1/2"D. It is marked underneath by the maker, and the name of the artist inscribed into the side of the mound base. More than a hundred and fifty years ago Johann Maresch opened his Siderolithfabrik with partner, Adolf Baehr. Together the partnership created wonderful objects made for the home and garden gaining world wide recognition in 1906 winning a gold medal at the Liberec World Exposition. They produced a wide range of ceramics; like vases, flower pots, pictures, clocks, figurines, tobacco humidors, and garden decorations, such as animals and especially gnomes. Above all the factories creations; the Maresch garden gnomes reputation was unequalled. 500/800 Sold $201.25 back to catalog |
