London: William Little. Folio approx. 16" x 11-1/2". Marbled paper-covered boards, 1/4 green leather, leather corners; spine with stamping, gilt letters, five raised bands with gilt decorations; marbled edges, pink end-papers. Issued bound with preface, list of engravings, and index to Vol. 4 (July 1844); event chronology July-Dec. 1944, "London and the Thames" supplement with 49" fold-out engraving and descriptive key (Jan. 11, 1945), index and list of engravings to Vol. 5. The hand-colored panorama issue and was sold separately. The present issue was a premium for ILN subscribers. The Panorama was the ILN's answer to the rival upstat Pictorial Times (Henry Vizetelly), which promoted itself by publishing a 4-part 12-foot mural of London. The ILN was first published in 1842, and its success had inspired the founders/backers of the PT. Engravings were the main draw for the ILN. 150/300 Sold $166.75 back to catalog |
