551. A KPM Figural of History and Mars

A KPM allegorical figural of History and Mars, on a circular mound base, decorated with laurel leaves, glazed in hand painted polychrome glazes with gilt detailing. Mars is seated on a marble pedestal, where he supports the standing History. He holds his shield and sword and rests one foot on his helmet. History carries a book and gazes down on Mars with dispassionate interest. The figural is marked inside and has "Geschichte & Mars" in relief on the edge of the base. The figure measures 17-3/4"H.

KPM is used to denote porcelain made by the Konigliche Porcelaine Fabrique, or the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin, emulating the distinctive Meissen style, which was founded in 1751. At the end of the second world war, the factory of Berlin was partly destroyed. During the rebuilding, the production was temporarly moved to a factory located in Selb. The production during this period was marked with the scepter mark with the initial 'S' added. In addition to the factory mark, and this for wares which were decorated by painters employed by the Berlin factory, a 'decoration' mark was applied as from the 19th century. These were stamped in blue, red or green on the glaze and were depicting or an scepter, an eagle or a globe. This piece has the globe mark.
