London: Bradbury and Evans, 1857, First edition, volume one of two, 8 vol, illustrated by Phiz (Hablot K. Browne). 3/4 leather with marbled boards. Tipped in signed letter dated "Thursday third March 1864", recipient unknown; letter states " Many thanks for your call (?) yesterday. I decided to let Edward go, and as (?) not doubtful he will be the better for it.". Handwritten in blue inl on grey stationary of "Gad's Hill Place, Higham by Rochester Kent".
