388. An American Silver Tankard by Liberty Browne (1776-1831), Philadelphia, Circa 1812-1815

An important heavy silver lidded tankard, made by Liberty Browne of Philadelphia (1776-1831), with a stepped lobed cover, scrolled handle and shield-shaped terminal, the plain baluster shaped body atop a stepped base. The front face of the tankard is beautifully inscribed with initials surrounded by a foliate wreath and a ribbon and bow at the top and tied wheat below. The tankard weighs 51.7 troy oz. and measures 10"H. It is marked on the bottom "L. Browne" four times. No other marks found. Browne was a partner from 1801 to 1809 with John Houlton in Baltimore MD as BROWNE & HOULTON, a partner from 1810 to 1811 with William Seal in Philadelphia PA as BROWNE & SEAL and worked from 1812 to 1815 as a silversmith in Philadelphia PA. Browne was the President of the Select Council and appointed in many civic positions including Philadelphia county treasuer. He was an active member of many councils of defense during the War of 1812 and was held in high regard among his peers. On display in the Pittsburgh PA gallery.
