The Yoruba have the highest rate of twin births in the world (45 out of 1000) with an infant mortality rate of 50 per sent. The Yoruba believe that the twins share a single soul so if one dies, a companion figure is carved and treated as if it were alive. They are honored with libations and prayers because it is believed that they influence the life of the family. Measure approx. 8-1/2"T and 8"T.

They are honored with libations and prayers because it is believed that they influence the life of the family. The smaller twin is 10"H and the taller is 10-1/4"H, approx. 3-1/2"W x 2-1/2"D.

A Yoruba rattle, carved in a dark wood, with leather thong to which is attached three hanging pieces of leather with shells strung on, approx. 6-1/2"H x 4-1/2"W x 3"D. The top portion of the rattle is in the shape of a head with flowing hair that forms a handle. The face has one applied piece of wood in the eye socket and is lacking the other.

Carved wood polychrome mask. Measures approx. 7"T x 6-1/2"W x 9-1/2"L. This mask is similar to a "Gelede" mask now in the Manchester Museum. This sort of artifact was brought to Europe from Africa during the 18th and 19th Centuries to encourage support for missionary societies.
