A lively market day scene. Oil on canvas, indistinctly signed on verso, framed in an ornate cast and gilded frame, 16-1/2" x 13" canvas size, with framing overall 21-1/4" x 18-1/2". A vegetable seller takes coins from a young woman carrying her baby in front of a shop while others look on. A dog standing nearby looks over his shoulder at something out of the picture. In the distance other structures are seen, and a circus-type performance is being presented on a platform at the left. The sign for the shop appears to be a pair of eyeglasses.

The picture has an older paper backing in the frame which has been glued to a newer paper support, inscribed in ink with the title and "Design'd and painted by Sam: Shelley. "Mrs. Crouch" dated 1792, an aristocratic oval love-token portrait on ivory, set into a marked 18K gold frame with English hallmarks. An intimate portrait with powered coiffure, bare shoulders and pearl necklace. Mrs. Crouch was said to be one of the lovers of George IV, Prince of Wales in 1792. The simple oval gold frame measures approx. 3" x 2-1/2", without the bail, and has a convex glass recto and verso. The title and date are inscribed in ink showing through the back.

Handsome young gentleman in Military uniform, painted on ivory, set into a simple unmarked oval rose gold frame with fancy bail, with a convex glass, the verso convex plain rose gold. Initialed "CS" lower right in white to blue background. There are varnished details accenting some of the linear facets to the drawing. Approx. 2-3/4" x 2-3/8". The costume and hairstyle of the sitter can be dated to the 1800's.

Watercolor on ivory, oval portrait miniature, dated 1809 and initialed illegibly lower right. An exceptionally well painted portrait of a blushing young woman, the sitter in an Empire dress with an amethyst crescent shaped pin on the collar, with seed pearls and upswept hair with a tortoise shell comb, framed under a convex glass. The background is a textured moss green, graduated from darker at the bottom to lighter at the top. Set into unmarked rose gold case with fancy bail. Verso of case is convex, with very dark cobalt glass with a starburst pattern below, surrounding an oval of braided hair momento. Approx. 3-1/4" x 2-7/8".

A young lady resting at the edge of a glade. Oil on canvas, indistinctly initialed and dated on rocks near the lower left corner (?"H.M.?), 15-1/4" x 12-1/4" canvas size, with elaborately carved frame overall 22-1/4" x 19-1/4". The young lass has a contemplative expression, her blond tresses flowing loosely over her shoulders, rests against a tree trunk at the edge of a wooded area. Beyond in the rosy distance is the indication of a mountainous panorama. Scenes of idyllic rustic life have been popular since the early 19th Century in England, from which comes a wealth of irresistable paintings of people in all phases of the country life still enjoyed today. This painting is typical of such a narrative.
