A trompe l'oeil drawing of a collection of graphic works. Pencil, ink and watercolor on laid paper. Image comprised of a lottery ticket, playing card, artist note about Arend Fokke Simonsz (1755-1812), engraver, map, music sheet, "Letters of History" based on Europe; lottery ticket dated 1786. Signature not found. With "wood" background, expertly matted and framed, not inspected out of framing. Image apprx 10-1/2" x 17", overall in frame approx. 19" x 24-1/2". Text on papers included French, German, Latin and Dutch.

127. John Gould (British, 1804-1881)
A pair of bird lithographs "Budytes Rayi (Yellow Wagtail)" and "Budytes Flava (Grey Headed Wagtail)" (plate 119) from the "The Birds of Great Britain" hand-colored lithographs circa 1862-73. Both are framed under glass, with a cream color mat, in silvered wood frames. Images measure approx. 13" x 19"; framed overall approx. 19-1/2" x 25-1/2". John Gould has become known as one of the foremost orthinological artists. Gould created almost 3000 images that were made into hand-color lightographic plates of birds and other animals. The lithography and hand coloring was done by other artists, among them his wife, Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear, William Hart, and H.C. Richter, whose names appear with Gould's on each image.

128. Lucius Rossi (Italian, 19th Century)
"The Actor". Watercolor, signd in the lower right corner, matted and framed under glass, approx. 15" x 9", with frame overall 27" x 20". A slender actor stands beside a fence surrounded by foliage. The face of the actor is in deep shadow from the large picture hat. The lace gloves and the two chantelaines attached at the waist are nice details. This sort of cross-costuming was often done at the time in the theatre. The images of this nature have since become very collectable.
