32. Hugo Kauffmann (German, 1844-1915)

An interior scene with an older gentleman reading. Oil on canvas, mounted onto paperboard, signed in the lower left corner, dated '69, framed, 21" x 16" board size, 23" x 18" with framing overall. An older gentleman in the center of the composition is highlighted, while the other figures are in dimmer light, probably in a tavern interior. To the left are seated at a table and a tavern maid is seated behind a curtain to the right. Stamped on the back of the board is a notation that the painting was restored at the Copley Gallery in Boston, July 31, 1917.

Hugo Kauffmann was the son of the painter Hermann Kauffman. He began his training in 1861 and soon developed a style and trade depicting Bavarian genre scenes with great artistic skill and charm. His faithfully rendered scenes depicted farmers, travelers, poets and overall rustic vignettes of plainly happy subjects.
