456. A 19th Century Japanese Muiti-Armed Kannon Figure in Gilt Carved Wood

A 19th Century Japanese Kannon figure, with multiple arms and faces, seated on a lotus blossom atop an architectural base, with a decorative halo behind. Made in four parts, not bolted together, the octagonal base is decorated with relief carving, the lotus flower forming a platform for the seated figure. The figure is seated in a serene lotus position and wears a crown with many faces looking in several directions. The arms and hands (fourteen on each side) extend holding various objects in various configurations. The halo behind the figure is carved in pierced foliate patterns with a flaming perimeter. The entire piece measures approx. 22"H x 12"W x 12"D.
