389. A Lot of Neyret Freres Woven Silk Pictures

A lot of three framed Neyret Freres woven silk pictures, ""Teeter Totter", 7-3/4" x 10-1/2" image, 12-1/2" x 15-1/4" matted and framed, "Tug of War", 7-3/4" x 10-1/2" image, 12-1/2" x 15-1/4" matted and framed, and "First Piano Lesson", 11" x 8" image size, matted and framed, 16" x 12-3/4". Each has the "NF" initials woven into a corner, and the artist's name on the edge (now covered by matting). Originally produced as souveniers during WWI, the jacquard woven silk tapestry pictures became very popular in their day, though production stopped by WWII. They are very collectable today and are similar in nature to the "Stevengraph" made by Thomas Stevens of England. Although there were a few other manufacturers that did American scenes and a Chinese manufacturer who did famous landmarks, the Neyret Freres are superior in quality and subject.

Frederick Morgan (British, 1856-1927) specialized in pictures of children, rustic idealized peasants, baby animals and jolly sailors. His enormously popular paintings were reproduced as prints, and many as Neyret Freres woven silk pictures. Jules Alexis Muenier (French, 1863-1942) was a popular painter of genre scenes trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and elected Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1895.
