Albert Pels was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at the Cincinnati Academy of Art and the University of Cincinnati. While in New York, Pels studied with with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League. He is now most often classified as a Social Realist from which tradition this gritty composition comes.
