15. Unknown Artist (Continental School, 19th Century)

A young lady resting at the edge of a glade. Oil on canvas, indistinctly initialed and dated on rocks near the lower left corner (?"H.M.?), 15-1/4" x 12-1/4" canvas size, with elaborately carved frame overall 22-1/4" x 19-1/4". The young lass has a contemplative expression, her blond tresses flowing loosely over her shoulders, rests against a tree trunk at the edge of a wooded area. Beyond in the rosy distance is the indication of a mountainous panorama. Scenes of idyllic rustic life have been popular since the early 19th Century in England, from which comes a wealth of irresistable paintings of people in all phases of the country life still enjoyed today. This painting is typical of such a narrative.
