| 72. William Leroy Flint (American, Cleveland School, 1909-1991)
"The Dispeptic". Oil on canvas, signed in the lower right corner, framed in a wide gilt frame, canvas size 18" x 12", with framing overall 27" x 21". This is a classic example of the artist's taste for caricature and Social Realism, both in which he excelled. Leroy Flint was born in Ashtabula, Ohio. He took his early training in fine art in Cleveland and became one of the many fine WPA artists from the region. He executed several works on paper for the graphic arts project and was responsible for several local murals ca. 1940. Flint saw four years of service in WWII from which came a large group of caricatures involving the lives of soldiers. He taught art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, worked at the Akron Art Institute, and as a professor of art at Kent State University. Many feel that his caricatures and satirical paintings are among his best, some deriving from his time in the army in WWII and the Depression. 1,500/2,000 Sold $2,012.50 back to catalog |
