| 212. A Dutch Silver Tobacco Box, Amsterdam ca. 1694
Rare Dutch silver tobacco box. Elongated form box with rounded corners and a hinged lid. Top of the lid features three medallion repousse decorations depicting various scenes with people; meandering flowers and foliage fill the space between the medallions. Sides of the box feature eight portrait medallions. Stippled monogram "JBB" on the bottom. Hallmarked on the bottom with a ca. 1694 Amsterdam hallmark, an unidentified mark and the axe mark, which was used 1853-1927 as a tax mark for old silver items bearing older silver marks, that had come back into circulation. Top margin on the front of the box bears maker's initials "P R" and an unidentified hallmark of a crowned letter "O" within an oval cartouche.
