334. A Large Trumeau Mirror

A large trumeau mirror with an arched top, with a gilt beaded framed painting of a dog next to a still life and some game, with a mirror framed in a gilt beaded frame in the lower portion, with carved gilt accents and a soft green antiqued glaze, the panels on either side of the painting marbilized (faux painted) in green topped by gilt carved foliate forms. The frame is stamped "Made In France" on the reverse. Overall the trumeau measures approx. 62"H x 48"W, the painting measures approx. 33" x 25" and the mirror measures approx. 15" x 25".

In French furniture; the name "trumeau" is given to a pier mirror. They came into vogue in the middle of the 17th Century. They were usually designed in accordance with the prevailing style of ornament. This piece was made to be viewed high up, as over a mantel.
