| 65. Carl Gaertner (American, Cleveland School, 1898-1952)
An interior scene of a steel mill. Tempera on board, signed and dated 1941 on the lower edge to the left of the center, framed in the original frame and glazed with plexi, board size approx. 28" x 40", with original 3-1/2" wide painted frame, 35" x 47-1/2". The painting is reputed to be of the interior of J & L Steel, a large steel making firm in the heyday of the steel industry in Cleveland. During his life, Gaertner, a native Clevelander, was both a painter and a teacher. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art, became a member of their faculty and taught there until his untimely death at the age of 54. His realistic style of work addressed a variety of subjects, including the early urban landscapes of the steel industry in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Over the course of his career, Gaertner was a well respected painter winning many awards, garnering both local and national recognition. 9,000/12,000 Sold $10,062.50 back to catalog |
