139. Paul Bough Travis (American, Cleveland School, 1891-1975 )

A charcoal study on paper of a portrait of "John", signed in the lower right corner, dated 1930 and 11/26, matted in a French lined mat, not framed, sight size 15" x 11", with matting overall 22-1/4" x 18".

This study is from the wealth of African subjects depicted by Travis after his extensive travels there in 1927. Born in West Point, Ohio near the border of Pennsylvania, he is closely associated with the watercolor tradition of Northeast Ohio. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art, served in the Army in World War I and remained in Europe for several years where he taught art at American universities in Europe. In 1920, he returned to Ohio to teach at the Cleveland School, renamed in 1940 the Cleveland Institute of Art, and remained there until 1948.
