30. Alberto Pasini (Italian, 1826-1899)

"Mounted Arabs In Village" as stated on name plate. Oil on canvas, signed in the lower left corner and dated 1878, framed in an ornately detailed gold leafed frame with a nameplate below. The scene is probably India-possibly Rajasthan. There is an Indian Yogi, sitting on the verandah of the haveli. The women are Indian, wearing saris, with others figures, wearing more local clothing. The man in white is wearing a dhoti. Canvas size is 28" x 22-1/2", with gilt frame with nameplate below overall 35-1/2" x 30".

Following Napoleon's campaign of 1798 came first a trickle and then a torrent of westerners into the Near and Middle East. The writers who wrote about their experiences and the artists who painted what they saw became known as the Orientalists. Alberto Pasini was born near Parma, Italy in 1826. Of the Italian School, he is considered to be one of the finest of Orientalist and genre painters. Like many 19th Century artists, Pasini lived for several years in Turkey, Arabia, and Persia where he drew inspiration for the "exotic" subjects of many of his pantings.
