Traditional folk Icon of St. Nicholas, probably from the Kiev region of Ukraine. Gesso and tempura on wood panel. The icon is in a frame with orange velvet lining. This is a very nice example of naive iconography of late 18th early 19th century. Overall it measures approx. 10-1/4"H x 8-1/4"W.
Iconography in Ukraine started approximately at the same time Christianity was introduced. There is no formal school for the icons from that area as they were created mostly by self-taught artists.
