| 17. A Ukrainian School Folk Icon, ca. Late 18th Early 19th Century
Traditional folk Icon of St. Nicholas, probably from the Kiev region of Ukraine. Gesso and tempura on wood panel. The icon is in a frame with orange velvet lining. This is a very nice example of naive iconography of late 18th early 19th century. Overall it measures approx. 10-1/4"H x 8-1/4"W. Iconography in Ukraine started approximately at the same time Christianity was introduced. There is no formal school for the icons from that area as they were created mostly by self-taught artists. 300/600 Sold $149.50 back to catalog |
