| 194. Max Kalish (American, 1891-1945)
A painted plaster bust of David Deitz, in dark brown color pigments over the plaster to resemble bronze, signature incised into the upper part of the pedestal base "M. Kalish 1939", the life-size bust is atop a cube self-base with a plinth below, overall approx. 19-1/2"H x 6"W x 8"D. "Max Kalish attended the Cleveland public schools and upon graduation entered the Cleveland School of Art, whence he went to New York and continued his studies at the National Academy of Design under A. Sterling Calder and in the studios of Herbert Adams, Isidore Konti, and C.S. Pietro. Two years later he went over to Paris where he entered the Academie Colorossi. Here he won the medal for sculpture in competition with all the students of that year. He next studied at the world famous Academie des Beaux Arts where he spent another year, varying his studies with trips to leading art galleries of Europe. He returned to America in 1913, and was called to San Francisco where he worked on the sculpture staff of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. In 1924 he won the first prize award for sculpture at the Cleveland Museum of Art. He is also the winner of the Mary B. Jenkins prize for sculpture, awarded through the Grand Central Art Galleries of New York. He was elected as associate to the National Academy in 1934." - ex. Emily Genauer in "Labor Sculpture" by W.
