| 470. A Fine Pair of Chinese Cinnabar Lacquer Boxes
A fine pair of antique Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer boxes, each 5-5/8"W x 3-7/8"D x 2-1/4"H, in an aubergine color, with brass edges at the lip and base of the boxes and on the lip of the lids that has darkened with age. Each box has an intricate landscape with figures, buildings, and rivers carved into the top of the lid, surrounded by meandering flowers and leaves, and the sides are also carved with similar foliage. The undersides of the boxes are also carved with geometric motifs and an image of a fan and a gourd, with a central portion carved with six Chinese characters. One scene is of two seated scholars being served by an attendant with mountains in the distance. The other is of two figures emerging from a boat and two on shore within another mountainous landscape. *On preview in Pittsburgh, PA. 400/600 Sold $345.00 back to catalog |
