| 39. Fred J. Bussman, P. A. A. (American, 19th Century)
Forest Interior. Oil on canvas over board, signed in the lower right corner and framed in a pretty gilt frame with flower corner ornaments under glass. Painting size is 8" x 10", and with the framing over it measures 13" x 15". Inside the framing there is a partially covered pencil inscription on the back of the board "Compliments...A. F. King". Fred J. Bussman, P. A. A. "Catalogue of Fine Art Department of the Pittsburgh Exposition Society under the auspices of the Pittsburgh Artists Association. 1878". Mr. Bussman has a striking portrait of the Hon. Peter Zern and a number of very charming landscapes, of which we prefer No. 52. He has also a large fruit piece and two small pictures of grapes on pine boards. Bussman, the Leonardi da Vinci of Pittsburgh, not because of his color alone, but like Leonardi, he is a musician and painter, and on last Valentine's Day was also declared poet by some of his lady friends; and who knows but that he may not, like a great Italian, invent an instrument of his own some day soon, and at the musical contest at Paris this year win the prize, we hear from him oftener than we see anything of him or his brush. We might say the same of Clarence Johns, as it is only by his merry (?) laugh, and not by his brush, that we lately know anything of his existence. The Late F. J. Bussman Obituary, 1897 "General and genuine sorrow was felt here during the week when the news was received of the death on Tuesday, of Mr. Fred J. Bussman, at Munich. In local music and art circles Mr. Bussman was prominent. He possessed the temperament of the artist as well as the musician. Coming here from Germany when a boy he first revealed artistic talent and became a painter of more than average ability, studying assiduously here and abroad. In later years, convinced that he could not do justice to both arts, he abandoned his art work, save as a means of relaxation and devoted himself wholly to the practice and teaching of vocal music. In this he achieved success, due to his fine tenor voice and to his fitness as a teacher. Some very prominent singers have been his pupils. His long service as tenor of Third Presbyterian Church quartette choir made him favorably known as a conscientious and acceptable singer. He was graduated from the Conservatory of Music at Milan. During the past summer Mr. Bussman decided to to return to art, and sailed for Munich with that end in view. His health had become impaired and the end came suddenly. He was a warm hearted, popular man who will be much missed. The deceased, who was unmarried, is survived by a venerable mother and a brother. The remains were interred in Munich. Mr. Bussman was born in Germany in 1842." 300/500 Sold $414.00 back to catalog |
