209. A Silver & Moss Agate Chalice, German, ca. 16th/19th Century

Probably gilt at one time, the silver chalice with a moss agate oval bowl is comprised of castings from between the 16th and 19th centuries. The base has a flat band, surmounted with a gadrooned, round base with chased flowers, each with a bezel mounted stone, or glass. Freeform "s" scrolls raise a knop, displaying four carved scarab stones. The neck is trumpet shaped with chased work, and attached are four hinged straps, with two purple cabochons and two cut red stones, probably glass. Oval moss agate with wonderful translucence is approx. 2-7/8" x 4". The fitted lid , also chased, has four purple bezel set embellishments and three blue, one of which is in the flower. Hallmarked multiple times, hallmarks include; "AV", "N", "13", "n". Markings indicative of 15th-16th Century as well as 19th Century.
