365. An Archaic Ceramic Vessel From Thebes
An archaic ceramic vessel in a slightly bulbous shape, made from brownish-red clay, with a simple lip at the top, approx. 10-1/2"H x 5-1/2" in diameter at the widest point. The vessel does not stand up on its own as the bottom is not totally flat. There is a partial label with a hand written description affixed to the shoulder of the vessel; two pieces of this label that have fallen off are included with the lot. The label reads: "From Tomb of Ancient Thebes. Secured by Prof. (Petrie) .......to Dr. Horton in London......... Information about William Flinders Petrie, Egyptologist accompanies the lot. The piece is reputed to have been excavated by Petrie, given to a Dr. Horton as a gift; and from Mrs. Horton to Judge Frederic R. Colie of Short Hills NJ in 1905, also of Cleveland, Ohio, an ancestor of the owner.

An amusing pair of faience figurative brackets in the form of a monk and knight. Thickly applied glazes in shades of blue, ochre, brown, and green. Both fitted with hanging wire. No maker's marks found, probably Italian. Overall measure approx. 7"T x 7"W x 6-1/4"D.

A large Boch Freres pottery charger by Chas Catteau. A traditional low countries design with stylized flowers and bold geometric and organic elements. Overall palette of this charger includes black, royal blue, mustard yellow, ochre, and mint green. Bottom stamped with blue underglaze Boch Freres and Chas Catteau insignias, as well as underlined decorator's initials L.D. and underlined number 971; incised mark "22P KC". The charger is fitted with a hanging wire. Measures approx. 14-5/8"D x 2-1/2"T.

370. A French Glazed Ceramic Helmet
A glazed ceramic helmet, slightly smaller than life-size, with a shaped shoulder and neck, and with a pierced upper faceplate, with a crest on the top flanked by raised flowers, glazed in cobalt blue designs over white. The designs are rococo and floral with dragons and helmets with lances and shields on either side of the head. Overall the piece measures approx. 14"H x 9-1/2"W x 12"D. It is marked "France" with crossed swords inside the underside. There are two holes with wired metal at the back and one hole in the crest.

An earthenware vessel with straight sides and short flared rim and base. Decorated on the sides with oblong floral cartouches over scalloped design ground accented with blue flowers. The traditional Iznik-style palette includes turquoise, blue, white and brown ochre tones. The bottom is marked with an underglaze numbers 13 and 11. The vessel bears an old sticker "The British Antique Dealers' Association/ For Customs Purposes PNLY/ Certified over 100 years old." Measures approx. 10-1/2"T.
