"Aurelia Leaves: Seed Pods From The Tulip Tree". Oil on canvas, signed and dated '57 in the lower right corner, canvas size 16" x 14", with framing overall 20-1/4" x 18-1/4". This painting is accompanied by an unframed card with an ink sketch and title of the foliage. It is a tonally painted image with the background being a river next to a desert scene with palm trees and mountains in the distance. The branch of pods and leaves are in the direct foreground. The composition is much in the same tradition as early botanical artists created, with a distant landscape in the background and the botanical subjects held very close in front.

A very nice example of a popular subject; the spilled basket of fruit. The rendering of the fruit and leaves surrounding the basket is particularly well done.

Other ships including steamers are seen in the distance. The shoreline with a fortress and other buildings are indicated at the left of the composition. This is a very nicely painted piece that could be improved a great deal by conservation.

Portrait of a beautiful young woman. Oil on canvas, inscribed on verso "By Albert Pels, NYC...(on reverse)...Given to Clyde Singer...1955", framed in a newer ornate frame with a linen liner, canvas size approx. 22" x 16", with framing overall approx. 30-3/4" x 24-3/4". Additionally, there is a small color sketch on the reverse, upside down, of a black person. The back of the canvas is covered with an acetate sheet so the inscription and the sketch are visible. This is one of the prettiest examples of Pels' work to come on the auction market in recent years, exhibiting a delicacy and sensitivity in its depiction of the young sitter.
