228. Lubomir L. Daltchev (Bulgarian/American, b. 1902)
"The Boxer". Cast bronze on a rectangular self-base, signed in Cyrillic, "AXA" on the man's chest, approx. 19-3/4"x 11" x 7". Daltchev immigrated to Ohio in 1979 having fled his homeland and Communist rule. His original prominence in his native country was tempered by political artistic restrictions; he defected as a political statement and to achieve freedom of expression as did his wife, Ana, and many artists of the time. This sculpture is a fine example of the mainly figurative work by Daltchev; in strong muscular, angular forms with a gritty surface texture.
