125. Michael Wolgemut (German, born c.1434-1519) and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (German, ca. 1460–1494)
An incunabula leaf from the Latin edition of the famous Nüremberg Chronicle, 1493, plate number CCLXXVI showing a fantasy view of Achaia. Latin text, sheet size approx. 16-1/4" x 11-1/4".
The Nüremberg Chronicle was first published in the summer of 1493 in latin. With its 1809 woodcuts, the Chronicle has more illustrations than any other book of the 15th Century. The book describes the history of the world from Creation up to the publishing year of 1493. The work was published in a transitional age between Medieval times and the Renaissance, which is shown by its form as a Medieval chronicle, at the same time using classical sources in a modern way. The images are executed by the artists Michael Wolgemut and Willhelm Pleydenwurff. Wollgemutt was the instructor of Albrecht Dürer. The chronicle is a high point of the woodcut technique.
The label on the back is from Ferdinand Roten Galleries, "Nurnberg 1493 World Chronicle wdcts. by Wolgemut and Pleydenwurff" with reference number: 69-42-302.
