A Hudson River style painting. Oil on canvas, no signature found, canvas size approx. 30-1/4" x 42-1/4", in a period frame with a sand finished cove and corner ornaments, approx. 40" x 52". A panoramic view of a vast landscape surrounded by mountains. There are points of interest in the composition such as figures on a road and farm buildings. This well-painted piece comes from the Lillian Knight estate, an old Akron, Ohio estate, neighboring Stan Hywet. An interesting note is that when this painting came to auction it had never been out of its frame and was fit with hand-made square nails.

Two portraits: The first of a young minister and the other of his pretty wife, both are oils on canvas, mounted onto masonite boards, each is framed in a newer gilt frame. Mr. measures approx. 35" x 28-1/2" sight size, with framing overall approx. 40" x 33-1/2". Mrs. measures approx. 29-1/2" x 24" sight size, with framing overall approx. 34" x 28". The young lady is particularly lovely and well painted.

Portrait of Amelia Weber (1865-1932) With Her Doll. Oil on canvas, no signature found, framed in an arched-top spandrel frame with applied ornamentation, canvas size approx. 37" x 30", overall with frame approx. 44" x 38". This full-length portrait depicts a young woman from a family of means standing in a carpeted parlor and holding her fine doll. This is a very good example of a commissioned studio portrait which has the appearance of a photo-assisted technique. From a southern Ohio estate (Miamisburg).

Hirth du Frenes is mostly known for painting scenes from everyday life and portraits. He was the son of Frenchman, Louise Drevelle du Fresnes. From 1861-1864, he was the student of Kreling at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nuremberg, the fine arts academy. Following this period, he worked at L'Academie de Munich under the direction of A. Von Ramberg. He traveled for five years in Belgium, Holland and France. He debuted at his first Salon around 1870, exhibiting in Vienna, Berlin and Munich. He was a close friend of Leibl and Courbet, a great influence in his life and art.

There is a photocopy of this painting and a description from a former auction attributing the painting to an "A. Van Boeul".

Flute Serenade. Oil on canvas, signed in the lower right corner, inscribed "Munchen", framed in a feather-corner carved gilt frame, canvas size approx. 33-1/2" x 23-3/4", with frame overall approx. 40-1/2" x 30-1/4". This beautifully painted piece is a tour de force of detail and device. The shepherd boy is silhouetted by a misty distant lake scene. The girl postures coquettishly as she listens to his music. The foreground occupied by the children as well as their costume is rendered with minute attention to detail.

16. Jules Desire Lubin (French, b. 1854)
"The Trespasser". Oil on canvas, ca. 1883, signed in the lower right corner, framed, canvas size approx. 50" x 67", with frame overall approx. 54-1/2" x 71-1/2". There is a large red wax seal on the center stretcher. An interesting narrative in an interior at an impasse in an incident. Two officials appear to be about to arrest the man at the left surrounded by other figures. The dog at the lower center provides an additional dramatic feature as it snarls at the officials. The faces and postures of the men are particularly well painted. The frame has an old nameplate at the center stating the artist, title and that the painting was "Exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, Paris".

"Rue Delacour a Pointoise, 1922" or "La Vue Delacour Pointoise". Oil on canvas, signed in the lower left corner, framed in an antiqued gilt frame with an "Impressionist" finish, approx. 24-1/4" x 19-3/4" canvas size, with framing overall approx. 29-1/4" x 25-1/4". There is a hand-written label on the center brace of the stretcher with the name of the artist and the title of the painting. The title is also written on the stretcher at the bottom. There is also a partial label from Jules Bourlet & Sons, Ltd. and another hand-written label in red ink of "6203". Prov: From a Cleveland Ohio estate, purchased at auction approx. 60 years ago. This painting will be included in the up-coming catalogue raisonné by Didier Imbert.

An oval shaped imaginary landscape on canvas, approx. 16" x 20", framed in a period gilt frame with ornaments at the center top, bottom and sides. The idyllic landscape depicts overgrown ruins and sculptures at the left, a boat on a mountain-rimmed lake in the center and a road with figures, one kneeling in prayer at a shrine at the right. The far right side of the composition also has columns from ruins, overgrown with meandering pink flowery vines. The signature is along the trail at the lower right corner.
