157. Frank Nelson Wilcox (American, Cleveland School, 1887-1964)

Landscape with figures and horse. Watercolor on paper, signed in the lower right corner, matted and framed under glass, 14-5/8" x 21-5/8" sight size, with framing overall 23-1/2" x 30-1/2". Exhibited in the Cleveland Museum of Art May Show in 1934 (tag on verso), and exhibited in the invitational traveling watercolor exhibition of the Ohio State Fair, 1934 (also partial label on verso) with Cleveland Museum of Art Registrar's sticker on verso.

A leading American Scene watercolorist from Ohio, Wilcox was a native of Cleveland who enrolled in the Cleveland School of Art in 1906 and studied with Henry Keller. From about 1910 to 1916, he painted outdoors with Keller at Berlin Heights and experimented with Impressionism. However, several years later, he developed his signature style which was American scene or regionalist genre in a transparent watercolor technique.
