272. A Pair Of Girandoles In Cast Metals, Marble and Crystals

A pair of girandoles, consisting of two candle holders made of cast and gilded metal on white marble bases with suspended prisms on each. Each measures 14-1/4"H x 5"W x 3"D. The cast and pierced metal portions depict a young woman carrying a container near a dog and a fawn within in a leafy setting, with a ballustrade in the distance. At the top surrounding the candle cup is an ovoid wreath of grape cluster that supports the prisms. A pair of 19th Century girandoles made from cast and pierced metal, white marble bases and beveled crystals, approx. 14-1/4"H, with the pierced, cast and gilt metal on the body representing a young girl with a dog and a fawn standing near a ballustrade and surrounded by leafy trees, on rectangular white marble bases, with beveled crystals suspended from a wreath of grape clusters around the top.

The name "girandole" is given to a decorative candelabrum and is a French term derived from the Italian "girandola" meaning a revolving firework or fountain. The original oil girandoles or candle girandoles were designed to refract light with crystals and movement.
