365. An Archaic Ceramic Vessel From Thebes

An archaic ceramic vessel in a slightly bulbous shape, made from brownish-red clay, with a simple lip at the top, approx. 10-1/2"H x 5-1/2" in diameter at the widest point. The vessel does not stand up on its own as the bottom is not totally flat. There is a partial label with a hand written description affixed to the shoulder of the vessel; two pieces of this label that have fallen off are included with the lot. The label reads: "From Tomb of Ancient Thebes. Secured by Prof. (Petrie) .......to Dr. Horton in London......... Information about William Flinders Petrie, Egyptologist accompanies the lot. The piece is reputed to have been excavated by Petrie, given to a Dr. Horton as a gift; and from Mrs. Horton to Judge Frederic R. Colie of Short Hills NJ in 1905, also of Cleveland, Ohio, an ancestor of the owner.
