16. Jules Desire Lubin (French, b. 1854)

"The Trespasser". Oil on canvas, ca. 1883, signed in the lower right corner, framed, canvas size approx. 50" x 67", with frame overall approx. 54-1/2" x 71-1/2". There is a large red wax seal on the center stretcher. An interesting narrative in an interior at an impasse in an incident. Two officials appear to be about to arrest the man at the left surrounded by other figures. The dog at the lower center provides an additional dramatic feature as it snarls at the officials. The faces and postures of the men are particularly well painted. The frame has an old nameplate at the center stating the artist, title and that the painting was "Exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, Paris".

Lubin was a student of Loyer and Leon Bonat. He made his debut at the Salon of 1874. Few paintings of Lubin's have come to light in recent years, though the quality of his work is unquestionable.
