60. Joseph Inguimberty (French, 1896-1971)

Sunbathers. Oil on canvas, signed in the lower right corner, framed in an ornately cast "Impresssionist" finish frame, 38-1/2" x 51-1/2" canvas size, with framing overall 44-1/2" x 57-1/2". There are labels written in French on the back of the frame with the artist's name and inventory numbers, and a label denoting what was perhaps the original owner's name and address in French on the back of the stretcher.

Inguimberty was known as a Post-Impressionist painter, and was greatly instrumental in the Vietnamese Modern school of painting. Recognizing the beauty of Vietnamese artistic traditions, Inguimberty and his colleague Victor Tardieu were determined to help the indigenous students to better maintain their heritage by exposing them to examples of both Vietnamese and French art. The two French artists placed greater emphasis on the Vietnamese tradition to prevent Westernization. However, Tardieu and Inguimberty pointed out that this return to the past could only be effective if it served as the starting point for further developments better suited to today's world; therefore the Vietnamese students were also well taught about the masters of French Impressionism.
