242. An Antique Verdure Tapestry, ca. 18th/19th Century

A magnificent, richly colored verdure tapestry, made either in France or Belgium in the 18th/19th Century, beautifully worked and preserved. The image is an idyllic scene in a verdant forest where three people are engaged in playing instruments while a cow walks the lane behind. There is a distant castle and other buildings seen through a break in the foliage beyond a lake. The picture is surrounded by a 16" wide self-border that contains flourishes of flowers, vases and birds. The fibers used in working this tapestry are wool and silk. The vibrantly preserved colors are rich browns, a range of teal colors, with accents in taupe, red, green, rust and saffron. The overall size is approx. 10'-8" square.
