| 225. Art Deco Austrian Chryselephantine Sculpture

The bronze is marked "Austria" and an oval insignia containing an "A" and a "T" on the base. It is also marked "1585" on the base. The bronze is mounted on a stepped black marble base, approx. 1-1/2"H x 4-3/4" x 4-3/8". The sculpture measures approx. 13-3/8"H overall with the base. The term "chryselephantine" was originally used to refer to figures made from ivory and gold and originated in ancient Greece. During the 19th Century the term became popularized to describe any multimedia carving that was made from a high-quality material such as bronze, marble, silver or onyx combined with carved ivory. 1,500/2,500 Sold $3,852.50 back to catalog |
