| 4. American School, ca. 1840
Two portraits: The first of a young minister and the other of his pretty wife, both are oils on canvas, mounted onto masonite boards, each is framed in a newer gilt frame. Mr. measures approx. 35" x 28-1/2" sight size, with framing overall approx. 40" x 33-1/2". Mrs. measures approx. 29-1/2" x 24" sight size, with framing overall approx. 34" x 28". The young lady is particularly lovely and well painted. The portraits are from direct descent in the family, currently owned by the great great great grand niece of the minister. The couple lived in the Philadelphia area. The current owner remembers seeing a signature on the backs of the paintings before they were mounted onto their masonite boards long ago (Nagele?). There is a note that was kept in the family Bible naming the sitters. 1,500/2,500 Sold $862.50 back to catalog |
